Rainwater pouring over a blocked gutter on a Hobart home during a storm
Licensed roof plumbers · Hobart since 1982

Your gutters,
cleared by a
licensed plumber.
Not a bloke
with a ladder.

Anyone can scoop the leaves out. We are the only gutter clean in Hobart done by licensed roof plumbers, so if there is something wrong up there, we are allowed to fix it. Most crews can only send you a photo and tell you to call someone like us.

  • Published rates, not a mystery quote. $132 service fee, $165 an hour, GST included.
  • Every downpipe flushed and flow tested, not just the gutter you can see from the street.
  • Photo report of what we found, so you are not taking anyone's word for it.
  • Fully insured, ISO certified, 50+ Tasmanians on the team. You never need to be home.

Phones answered by our Hobart office, not a call centre. No charge to talk it through, and no obligation to book.

01 / Why Hobart gutters block

Hobart does not get
a dry season.

Most of Australia gets a few dry months where a blocked gutter does no harm. We do not. Hobart gets rain in all twelve months, between 39mm and 62mm every single one, and October is the wettest of the lot. Add gums that drop bark and leaf year round, and a gutter left alone is a gutter that will overflow.

It gets more expensive, not less

Labour is charged by the hour, so the clock is the price. A gutter cleared every year takes a fraction of the time of one packed solid with three years of wet bark and sludge. Waiting does not save you money. It just moves the bill, and grows it.

The water goes inside, not over

Box gutters drain through a sump and outlet set inside the roofline. When that outlet blocks, the water has nowhere to go but into the ceiling. You will not see a drip down the wall first. You will see a stain on the plasterboard.

Then it stops being a cleaning job

Standing water rusts a gutter from the inside out. Overflow rots fascia and soffit. At that point you are not booking a clean, you are paying for gutter replacement at $32 to $90 a metre, plus the timber behind it.

Rainfall figures: Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart Ellerslie Road. Price ranges: independent 2026 Hobart cost guide, not Howrah Plumbing prices. Ours are published further down this page.

02 / The difference that matters

A gutter cleaner
finds the problem.
A plumber fixes it.

In Tasmania, roof drainage work has to be done by a licensed plumber. Gutters, downpipes and stormwater are roof drainage. So when a gutter cleaning crew finds a split joint, a rusted section or a blocked stormwater line, they are not allowed to touch it. They photograph it and hand you the problem.

We turn up as licensed roof plumbers who happen to be cleaning your gutters. If the fix is small, we will often sort it while we are already up there, with your say-so first. If it is bigger, it is the same company, the same guarantee and the same crew that already knows your roof. One trip instead of three.

03 / What you actually get

The Clear Run
gutter clean.

Every one of these is part of the job, not an extra we decide on from your roof. This is the whole scope in plain words, so you can hold any other quote in Hobart up against it and see what is missing.

Everything in the clean

Six things, every time, on every job. Several of them are the bits a cheap quote quietly leaves out.

  • Every gutter cleared by hand, and bagged

Leaves, bark, moss and the silt underneath, lifted out by hand and straight into bags on our truck. Nothing blown onto your roof, into your garden, or over the fence at your neighbour.

  • Every downpipe flushed and flow tested

We run water down each one until it comes out clear at the bottom. A gutter that still overflows after a clean has a blockage further down, and this is how you find out now rather than in July.

  • Box gutter sumps and outlets cleared

The hidden drains inside the roofline, the ones that put water into your ceiling instead of over the edge. Most quotes price the channel you can see from the ground and leave these alone.

  • A condition check by a licensed roof plumber

Rust, split joints, loose brackets, tired flashings, blocked valleys. Looked over by someone qualified to tell you whether it actually matters, or whether it will keep another year.

  • Before and after photos in your inbox

You see exactly what came off your roof and what it looks like now. No climbing up to check, no being home on the day, and no taking anyone's word for what was up there.

  • Your place left the way we found it

The debris leaves on our truck. No bags stacked by the bin, no sludge trodden down the path, and nothing for you to finish off after we have driven away.

The whole roof drainage system, not just the bits visible from the footpath One job, one crew, one visit Licensed roof plumbers, fully insured, and a workmanship guarantee on everything we touch.

04 / The part nobody mentions

If someone falls off
your roof, it is
your problem.

WorkSafe Tasmania is clear about this. Anyone on your roof is at work. If the person you hired is not carrying workers compensation and public liability, and they come off a ladder on your property, you are the one exposed.

Hobart makes that worse than most cities. On a Mount Nelson or West Hobart block, the low side of a single storey house can be a three storey drop. We work to ISO 45001, the international occupational health and safety standard, with harness and anchor points, and we carry both workers compensation and public liability on every job. Ask the other quote for the same two certificates and see what comes back.

05 / What it costs

What it costs,
before you ring.

These are our published rates, straight off our fees page. They are the same rates we charge on every Howrah job, so you can get a sense of where your place will land before you pick up the phone.

Service fee

$132.00

Business hours. Includes the first 30 minutes of travel.

Tradesperson

$165.00per hour

Charged after the service fee, for the time on site.

After hours call-out

$330.00

Nights, weekends and public holidays.

After hours labour

$242.00per hour

For the 2am call when water is coming through the ceiling.

What that means for a gutter clean. Most single storey Hobart homes are a morning's work in business hours. A two storey place, a steep block, or gutters that have not been touched in years take longer, which is exactly why leaving them is the expensive option. Tell us about your place when you book and we will talk you through what it is likely to take, so you are not watching the clock and guessing.

Rates taken from our published fees page and current at October 2026. All rates include GST. Materials, subcontractors and equipment are charged as required, and the final cost depends on the time on site.

Clear Run
Guarantee
06 / Risk, removed

If it overflows from a blockage we missed, we come back free.

Every other gutter cleaner in Hobart offers you either nothing or the words "satisfaction guarantee" with no explanation of what that means. Here is ours in one sentence you can hold us to: if your gutters overflow because of a blockage we should have cleared, call us and we will come back and clear it at no charge.

That sits on top of the workmanship guarantee that covers every job Howrah Plumbing does, and the manufacturer warranties on anything we install. We have been here since 1982, which is the real guarantee. We will still be in Hobart when you need us.

Who turns up

A Howrah Plumbing crew in a Howrah Plumbing vehicle, in uniform, out of our Mornington workshop. Not a subcontractor and not someone's mate with a borrowed ladder. We are a member of Master Plumbers Tasmania, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, and we have been doing this from the same city since 1982.

09 / Before you book

The questions
everyone asks.

What is it going to cost me?

Our rates are published above and on our fees page: a $132 service fee in business hours, which covers the first 30 minutes of travel, then $165 an hour for a tradesperson. All of it includes GST. What your job comes to depends on gutter length, roof height, access and how long it has been since the last clean, because you are paying for the time on site. Tell us about your place when you book and we will talk you through what to expect.

Do I need to be home?

No. As long as we can get around the house, we will do the job and send you the photos and the invoice afterwards. Plenty of our gutter work is for people who are at work, interstate, or renting the place out.

How long does it take?

Most single storey Hobart homes are a morning. Bigger or two storey places, or anything that has been left a few years, can take most of a day. We will tell you which when we call you back.

How often should I be doing this?

Once or twice a year for most Hobart homes. If you have gums over the roof, make it twice, and get one of them in late autumn once the leaf is down so a single clean does the work of two. If your block backs onto bush, clearing before summer matters for more than just drainage.

What happens if you find damage up there?

We photograph it, explain it and deal with it separately. Nothing extra gets done without you saying yes first. The difference is that we are licensed roof plumbers, so we can actually do the repair rather than telling you to find someone who can.

I have gutter guard. Do I still need this?

Yes. Gutter guard slows the build-up, it does not stop it. Fine material still gets through and sits under the mesh where you cannot see it, which is exactly where rust starts. We can lift and refit most guard systems. Tell us what you have when you book.

My place is two storey and on a slope. Can you still do it?

Yes. That is normal in Hobart and it is the main reason to use a crew with harness and anchor training rather than a ladder. Steep sites and two storey work are priced higher because they genuinely take longer, and we will tell you that upfront rather than discovering it on the day.

What if it rains on the day?

We work in Hobart weather most of the year, so light rain is not usually a problem. If conditions make the roof unsafe we will move you to the next available slot. We do not put people on a wet roof to keep a booking.

Are you insured?

Yes, public liability and workers compensation, and we are happy to send the certificates before we book. We are also certified to ISO 45001, the international standard for occupational health and safety. Worth asking anyone else quoting you for the same thing.

Can you do my rental properties or strata building?

Yes. We do a lot of work for property managers, strata committees and commercial sites across Greater Hobart, including scheduled annual maintenance so it is handled without anyone having to remember. Mention it in the form and we will sort out the whole portfolio.

10 / Where we work

Greater Hobart and
Southern Tasmania.

Crews on both shores, working out of Mornington, Hobart and Kingston. From the CBD, Sandy Bay and the hill suburbs across to Bellerive, Howrah and Lauderdale, and south through Kingston and Blackmans Bay. If you are further out, ring us anyway. We probably still get there.

11 / Next step

Get the number
before the next
downpour.

October is Hobart's wettest month. A gutter that is marginal now is a gutter that overflows in the next heavy week, and because labour is by the hour, the longer you leave it the longer it takes. One call, published rates, no obligation.
